Hi. I’m a Numbers Guy.

I’m good at numbers; like ‘calculate tip in my head’ good. But I’m thinking of getting into words.

From algebra to corporate finance, my life’s been a very quantifiable journey. My brain doesn’t see the world as it is; but instead, how much it is. Are you getting the picture? I hope you are because I can’t draw.

Being a ‘Numbers Guy’ became my identify. It helped me to avoid the scary, presumably infinite, depths of my soul. Do I want to audition for the high school’s production of Phantom of the Opera? Nah I’m not an actor; I’m just a numbers guy. How about taking a photography class? Art’s not really my thing; I like addition and subtraction more. Want to ask your crush out on a date? Well, I’m probably not an interesting date seeing as I only care about solving for ‘x’.

Let’s be clear: being a Numbers Guy has paid off for me. I’ve made a living as an accountant for over ten years. Plus, not to brag but, I eat at Whole Foods. It’s well within my $80 per day spending budget. As you can imagine, I have a spreadsheet that calculates my daily spending habits.

Writing on Medium is an endeavor to prove to myself, and maybe to others, that I, or we, don’t have to stuff ourselves inside identity boxes. Life is about exploration; and by definition, you can’t measure the yet unknown.

Proud of that last phrase. Maybe this won’t be so bad.
